Hospitals, Nursing Homes and Physicians – Get Ready for the Medical Marijuana Law!

By

The medical marijuana law became effective on January 1, 2013, and physicians who meet certain regulatory criteria are now permitted to prescribe medical marijuana. Are your physicians ready to accept these new patients, or provide existing patients with the services they want and need? The Department of Public Health (DPH) is currently building the necessary infrastructure to implement the law, including the development of an on-line registration process for patients and caregivers. DPH will issue registration cards to patients and caregivers as well as physicians once it completes the implementation of the program. During this interim period, however, the DPH regulations permit qualifying patients to obtain a special physician’s certification and use marijuana for medical purposes. Physicians and physician practices that are interested in assisting these patients won’t be waiting for DPH to finalize its regulations and will jump in right now.
