Attorney William Dolan Wins Important Superior Court Ruling for City of Providence

Attorney William Dolan Wins Important Superior Court Ruling for City of Providence

Debtwire, a legal and financial reporting service, has covered a Superior Court ruling in favor of the City of Providence, a client of Donoghue Barrett & Singal partner William Dolan.

Judge Sarah Taft-Carter ruled on 16 March that the City is not liable under the Takings Clause, weakening the lawsuit of two retirees who are challenging cost-cutting ordinances the city passed in 2011 and 2012. The ruling significantly narrows the retirees’ lawsuit, and indicates that Court will decide in favor of the City when the case goes to trial on 4 April.

Debtwire also announced that public safety officers of the City of Cranston have filed a federal lawsuit challenging a settlement between the State of Rhode Island and other state and local labor groups. The settlement, which the Superior Court approved last year, is part of Rhode Island’s 2011 pension reform effort.

Mr. Dolan serves as City Counsel for the City of Cranston.
