Public Health Council Votes to Expand Services Offered by Limited Service Clinics

By

On Wednesday, December 11th, the Massachusetts Public Health Council adopted final regulations amending 105 CMR 140.000 regarding Limited Services Clinics (LSCs). The Council voted to expand the types of services the LSCs may provide. LSCs may now provide all services that are within the scope of a nurse practitioner's practice, including point-of-care testing. In addition, all immunizations can now be provided by LSC. The age of patients that may be treated at an LSC was lowered from 24 months to 18 months.

It is anticipated that the approval of the regulations may prompt existing LSCs to expand the types of services they provide, and may encourage new sites to open. It is important to note that there are also important prohibitions in the regulations on advertising as or acting as primary care providers.
